Stonehenge June 2019

Hello and welcome to my Stonehenge newsletter, every so often I summarize my most recent subject so here is a brief insight into my Stonehenge paintings.

Although I paint a range of subjects my first love was painting watercolour landscape. I think watercolour best captures the atmosphere of the British climate and landscape. I have had an ongoing interest on both pre and ancient British history and have finally managed to take on the magnificent Stonehenge.

The visitor experience was interesting. I was amazed at the National Trust set up and the number of visitors. This did not impede on the impact the stone circle had on me. I was genuinely impressed and wish I had had a more in depth knowledge of the circles history beforehand.

All the paintings are original watercolour on paper the sizes and prices are on the website link. They are exclusively available for a fraction of the gallery price The smallest start at  £75 to the largest at  £350 each signed and delivered unframed. Simply be the first to email me at info@mjforster.com with your choice.

So here are the ten paintings I’ve selected. They were preceded by a lot of sketches and black and white work . I need to keep a hold of these as references for future paintings.  All twelve paintings are priced as signed and delivered unframed.

This is an initial foray into what I hope will become a far bigger project not just on Stonehenge but possibly into neolithic britain and possibly Europe.

1 32 x 48 cm £75

I have set these out roughly in the order they were painted. The first view here from N/NW was the first watercolour in realistic colours.

2) 30 x 42cm £95

The palette I chose was a constant dilemma. Looking from the west the stones seem to benefit from the use of a yellow/red/purple. This is one of the first paintings in these colours.

3) 45 x 85cm £145

A change of direction, now from N/NE. This was one of the most unusual views. I find the three outer stones on this side of the circle have a hint of a human form to them.

4) 35 x 50cm £125

Now looking from the east we can see the part of the outer circle that is most in tact. When constructing each composition it was these horizontal stones that I looked to as a base to measure all the relative heights.

5) 35 x 70cm £145

Here again from the North I stretched the composition for the first time. It’s another change of direction on the palette as I was looking for that unique grey of the sarcen stone.

6) 50 x 95 cm £225

From the North east this view with the central inner blue stone gives the most sense of depth to the henge. An interesting view of the alignment of the inner horseshoe.

7) 70 x 95 cm £295

I picked the North west as a view to focus on as it gives the best overall view of the variety of the stones sizes and shapes as well as there relative position to each other. This is the first of the largest paintings I did.  the rough aquarelle  paper really gave me a chance to begin to build texture into the stones.

8) 70 x 95cm £350

This is the final painting a slight shift of view from the previous painting. I feel I really caught that grey of the stone here.

I hope you have enjoyed the first set of work here. If you would like one of the twelve be the first to email me at info@mjforster.com It may be wise to make a first and second choice. It will have to be on a first to email basis and while I’ll not be looking at my emails on a 24 hour basis I will deal with them strictly on the order they arrive in and get back to you as soon as possible.

Any questions just ask.
